Daddy Daydreamer
Poems to be alone together

One thing my family is doing more of during isolation is reading together. My boys dusted off some old standbys—the Harry Potter series.
As my younger son read The Philosopher's Stone, my older son read The Half-Blood Prince. I stared at them. When did they get so old?
I was moved to write some poems . . .

A bedtime chat puts everything into perspective
My son and I contemplate life as we stare at the ceiling
Bedtime with our children used to be heavy on stories. As they get older, our rituals inevitably change. They still like it when we read to them, but it’s not a big deal if we skip it. Eldest often prefers a chat instead. He sometimes shares more about his day, when turning in for the night.
We have a good chat one evening, . . .

Boys' Night
A poem
Boys' Night
When Mommy goes out
it is our favourite time,
for it is our time—
it is boys' night.
Crack open the chips,
turn on a flick;
what shall it be?
Doesn't really matter—
it is boys' night.
Daddy, sit beside me!
No, Dad, sit beside me!

Story time with my kids is the best place to be
Bedtime rituals keep me connected with my children
When my eldest son turned seven we celebrated his birthday. I found myself daydreaming. I thought of the day he was born, returning from the hospital on a hot, sticky August night. My wife and I lay in bed and stared in joyous wonder at this newfound life we created. So small, so beautiful – so dependent.
She breastfed him, . . .
